Besides, the disaster had thrown157,000 people’s lives off gears.

The various causes of deaths following the calamity in the centre and north of the southern African nation, were “drowning, lightning strikes, or construction collapses caused by the floods,” divulged Rita Almeida, of the Mozambican relief agency INGC, to a news agency here.

She added, “The situation is stable, as we did not record any new recurrences of flooding in the past days. It is still raining, but with much less intensity and without significant impact.”

In the aftermath, over 50,000 people remain camped in 41 relief centres across the country, as collapsed roads and bridges continued to impede relief efforts.

UN spokesman Pasquale Capizzi was quoted telling the press, “We can’t say that the situation is completely under control as we don’t have a complete picture yet. However some humanitarian assistance stocks are already there and the rest is currently being shipped. Seeds will also be distributed as most people have lost their crops.”

In terms of dependence on agriculture, eighty percent of Mozambique’s population and 25 percent of its GDP, rest on it.
