Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung is coming tomorrow on a two-day visit to India during which some major outcome in trade and investment was expected.
The two countries already have very close defence and security ties and some progress in these areas was also likely.
The Vietnamese leader is coming about a month after President Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to his country.
Dung will begin his visit from Bodh Gaya in Bihar, the place where Lord Gautam Budhha is believed to have attained enlightenment.
After visiting Bodh Gaya and meeting state Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, the Vietnamese Prime Minister would leave for New Delhi the same day.
Next day, he would be given ceremonial reception in Rashtrapati Bhawan, and he will hold delegation level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Besides, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Lok Sabha Speaker will call on him. Mr Dung will also meet President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice-President Hamid Ansari.
Last year, Vietnam’s most powerful leader the Secretary General of the Communist Party Nguyen Phu Trong had visited India.
This year, Swaraj had gone to Hanoi in August, a month ahead of Mukherjee’s visit.
India and Vietnam had entered into a strategic partnership on Mr Dung’s first visit to India in 2007.
Vietnam is looking for diversification of economic ties with India which would be the focus of the talks during the visit.
Some progress was also expected on the purchase of defence equipment by Vietnam from India for which New Delhi had given a Line of Credit of one million dollar during the recent visit of Mukherjee to the country.
The Vietnamese Prime Minister is coming with a huge business delegation. Vietnam is looking for Indian investment in areas like power generation, infrastructure, IT, agro products in which India has advantage.
On the other hand, India would want to export machinery , raw materials for industries and equipment Processed food.
Dung visit would be in continuation of the series of high level interactions between the two countries which started with President visiting Vietnam in 2008, Vice-President in 2013, Prime Minister in 2010 and Speaker of Lok Sabha in 2011.
The Vietnamese President visited India in 2011, Vice-President in 2009, Chairman of National Assembly in 2010 and Prime Minister in 2012.
