PM Narendra Modi launches the ambitious ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi.
The campaign is aimed at cleaning India by 2019, when the country will celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Centre has also sought active participation of MGNREGA workers in a bid to take its campaign to grass roots level.
The ambitious drive includes sweeping, removal of garbage, debris and unauthorized encroachments from the roads, markets and residential places.
Giving a clarion call for launching of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech, asked people to take a pledge to make India clean.
Under the campaign, Government will try to make India free from open defecation in the next five years.
According to reports, those who take part in the launch include five thousand school children, college and university students, government officials, diplomats, expats and corporate houses’ representatives.
