Cardiologist at Kailash Hospital and Heart centre today launched the ‘Mission- Healthy Heart For All’ program in order to create heart-healthy environment for public at large. Prof.D.S.Gambhir, senior cardiologist and Director Kailash Hospital & heart Institute, Noida, officially declared that he will use his authoritative powers of teaching and certification to facilitate enforcement of basic rules in coronary heart disease prevention at homes. In addition the program will periodically message ‘Tips for healthy heart’ to 300,000 people in Noida through SMS and emails; and activate public outreach program through spaces in radio, newspapers and Television media.
“As per our plan by end of 2014 through this program we will reach around 350000 people in Noida. We are also going to maintain a database of the certificates issued and through timely research we will keep testing program’s effectiveness and improvise as and when required”. He added.
Addressing the press during the launch of program Dr.D.S.Gambhir says that “despite having achieved the number one slot in treating ailing hearts, we have a lot more to do in sensitizing public on preventing the heart disease. We have been trying to do so since many years but we have not been very successful. The proof lies in data that suggests rising incidences of heart attacks among Indians and that too from reasons that could have been prevented”
Rationalising his action plan he says that homes are the first place where we all feel protected the most. But does our heart feels the same at home? Hence this unique program wherein for the first time across country, we will try to be part of house rules in order to create healthy heart environment at home.
Elaborating the program Dr.D.S.Gambhir tells that “starting 27th September 2014, we will engage public in lecture programs in which they will be taken through series of presentation on simplest ways to keep heart healthy’.
‘The next but vital part will be honouring them with special certificates of recognition. These certificates are unique because they not only recognise person’s participation in program but also serve as poster of rule book that displays beliefs the house of the participants understands and follows in order to keep heart safe and protected’ he highlighted.
Dr Gambhir stressed that ‘having these certificate posters displayed at homes, will certainly aid in reminding residing members of their promise to keep heart safe along with adding grace and intellect value to house’
On prevalence of coronary heart disease he said ‘Epidemic of coronary heart disease is hitting India hard. Data shows that 4 people die of heart attack every minute in India. And most of them could have been prevented”
On scenario of risk factors for heart attack he quotes one large study with 6000 men and women from 11 cities in India where Seventy-nine per cent of men and 83 per cent of women were found to be physically inactive, while 51 per cent of men and 48 per cent of women were found to have high fat diets. Some 60 per cent of men and 57 per cent of women were found to have a low intake of fruit and vegetables, while 12 per cent of men and 0.5 per cent of women smoke.
Moreover, the prevalence of biological and metabolic risk factors was also found to be high. Overweight and obesity was reported in 41 per cent of men and 45 per cent of women. High blood pressure was reported in 33 per cent of men and 30 per cent of women, while high cholesterol was found in one-quarter of all men and women. Diabetes (and or metabolic syndrome) was also reported in 34 per cent of men and 37 per cent of women.
Dr Gambhir said that Over 90% of heart attacks can be prevented with simple changes in lifestyle, awareness and commitment to fighting this disease. 4 out of 5 heart attacks in men can be prevented by 4 simple ways- losing waist size, cutting down on alcohol, eating more fruits and vegetables and quitting smoking.
