Deloitte Monsoon Regatta to commence on July 1st It will be held for the first time in India in Americas Cup Format

Hyderabad: The Yacht Club of Hyderabad – YCH- announces the Deloitte Monsoon Regatta, the 6th edition of the largest sailing extravaganza in India attracting over 100 entries across new classes of boats like the Topper , Omega Optimist , Indopti and  the popular Family Championship. It will begin on July 01.

Suheim Sheikh Sharad DuttaLt Gen KS Rao and City sailors 300x193 Deloitte Monsoon Regatta to commence on July 1st  It will be held for the first time in India in Americas Cup FormatThe India’s largest Sailing regatta which is in its 6th year and being conducted for the first time in India in Americas Cup Format, an IPL kind easy to follow format.  This is also the first time that it will be an inter city tournament. It will be a significant event as far as city as local sailors are expected to make a mark this time.

Two world Champions and Arjuna Awardees Nitin Mongia and Mahesh Ramachandran will battle it out in Hussain Sagar after a long gap of 3 years informed  Lt.Gen KS Rao, Chairman Events Yachting Association of India.; Shri Suheim Sheikh Founder President , The Yacht Club of Hyderabad; Mr.Sharad Dutta,GM, Marriott while addressing the press conference this evening in the city

The Deloitte Monsoon Regatta has grown leaps and bounds thanks to the support of the Hyderabad Marriott for the last 6 years and  Deloitte India and Land Rover for three years.

YCH is a not for profit organization dedicated to teaching children how to sail and growing the watersports infrastructure in India. The club has recently introduced Kayaking at HussainSagar and DurgamCheruvu . The YCH on HussainSagar is the first open access sailing facility in India.

In a short span of 5 years the YCH with active support from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Authority HMDA, has produced top ranking young sailors who have been invited to sail with the Asian Games core probable squad.

The YCH has strong tie ups with NGOs like Project 511, NaandiFoundation , LSN Foundation, Rotary Deccan and Akaankshaand from Mumbai and this will be the first event where economically challenged kids from all these foundations including some from Mumbai have been trained and will be participating in large numbers. With 15 such kids rubbing shoulders with the elite , this will be a regatta to remember.

The Deloitte Monsoon Regatta will launch India’s first Inter City Sailing event and breakaway from the old order inter club format. With Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Goa fielding entries it sows the seeds of league sailing in India.

The Deloitte Monsoon Regatta will be sailing the Americas Cup format for the first time in India which is Television and viewer friendly. Watching a sail race will not be an exotic exercise any longer.

 

Legendary combatants and sailing world champions NitinMongia and Mahesh Ramachandran are set to return to the battle on the waves of the HussainSagaralongside young AbhimanyuPanwar from Chennai. Both Nitin and Mahesh are world champions and Arjuna awardees

In the Topper Nationals Defending National Champion Vishnu Sujeesh  will once again battle it out with silver medalist DheerSinghi after last years thrilling tie breaker for Gold went to the wire.  Both the boys from Chennai will need to contend with the 2013 Bronze medalist and local Hyderabadi lad RagiRajnikanth who has been spending endless hours on the water with blazing winds.

In the Optimist fleet up and coming local lad RishabNayyar of Silver Oaks and LeelaSagar of UdbhavSchool  are all set to lead the fleet. Sagar and Rishab finished 4th and 5th respectively at the last nationals and are bound to close in to medal winning positions with their deep knowledge of the shifty and gusty wind conditions prevalent at HussainSagar.

Sailor to watch from Mumbai will be KrishaMongia the little daughter of veteran NitinMongiaWorld Champion and Arjuna awardee who will be sailing her first national event after a long training in Langkawi under the tutelage of her father and mentor and professional coaches in Malaysia.

For the first time again many children from top schools in Hyderabad will be participating. Drishya Mani is the favourite in the Topper Class amongst the girls. RishabNayar from Silver Oaks is the favourite amongst the boys in the Optimist Class alongside LeelaSagar from Udbhav. Siblings Juhi and Tanishq Desai from DPS in the Optimist Class and Revanth Banda from DRS .AnanyaChauhan from Gitanjali is the favourite amongst girls for the Gold in the Optimist. A new entrant to sailing AnishaTandon from Chirec will also be participating.

The Deloitte Monsoon Regatta will be have an elite International Jury led by International JudgesJagadish Singh and Ajay Balram and the legendary Commander AbhimanyuPatankar will umpire the Omega Nationals.

Prizes worth 1 Lakh have been announced for the Deloitte Monsoon Regatta by Decathlon and will be on display at the venue.

The Deloitte Monsoon Regatta will also feature the Monsoon Jazz concert with the Sharik Hassan Quartet being featured for the second year on July 3rd at the Marriott convention center supported by Land Rover, Kingfisher and Luxury Wine partner Grand Pitars.

Broadridge a large outsourcing IT company from Hyderabad has also partnered.
