Bad weather hits rescue operations in Uttarakhand

Relief and rescue operations in the rain-hit Uttarakhand state has been affected due to bad weather on Monday.

Meanwhile  correspondent reports that weather is expected to open up for sorties.

Cheetah and Mi17 helicopters will undertake rescue operations to Badrinath and Bhairav Chatti.

Air force and army helicopters were carrying wood and kerosene to areas in Kedarnath and Badrinath valleys for cremation of bodies.

Meterological department however has predicted bad weather in next three to four days.

On Sunday, 12,000 pilgrims rescued from inaccessible and treacherous routes in rain-hit Uttarakhand.

Rescue operations continued on a war footing to evacuate pilgrims still stranded in high altitude areas amid a MeT department warning of light to moderate rains in the region from Monday.

Principal Director General, Press Information Bureau Neelam Kapur said that over 80 thousand  people have been evacuated so far from the worst-hit Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts where the famous Himalayan shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri in the rain-ravaged state with some 10,000 people still stranded in various places.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna has said that last rites of all the bodies found in Kedarnath will be performed in the temple city itself.

Indian Railways is continuing its efforts for the evacuation of passengers stranded in Uttarakhand.

Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge has been reviewing the arrangements regularly with the Railway Board and giving directions for the best possible arrangements.

Northern Railway and its Moradabad division have fully geared up for making appropriate arrangements.

Uttarakhand falls mostly under Moradabad railway division.

According to the Ministry, special trains have been running regularly since 20th June.
