Maldivian Election Commissioners removed, sentenced to jail

Maldives Supreme Court on Sunday gave a suspended jail sentence to country’s Election Commission President Fuwad Thowfeek MaldivesEC 300x221 Maldivian Election Commissioners removed, sentenced to jailand Vice President Ahmed Fayaz Hassan for disobedience of court order.

The sentence stripped the Commissioners of their membership in the commission and sentenced all four EC members to six months in jail.

The court said that the harsh jail sentence will be implemented after three years and would be suspended if they do not commit further offences in the intervening period.

The Supreme Court also ordered appointment of new commissioners within six days to conduct the parliamentary elections which are to be held on 22nd of this month.

Fuwad Thowfeek and his team had drawn wide appreciation from international observers for the way they had conducted the Presidential elections.

However, the Election Commission had come into conflict with the Supreme Court on a number of occasions during the Presidential election process last year.
